Lower Merion School Board Nixes Winter Sports Plan By 5-4 Vote

On Monday night (November 16), by a 5-4 vote, the Lower Merion School Board rejected an adminstration proposal that would have enabled a full schedule of interscholastic sports this winter.

Jason Stroup, Director of Athletics at Lower Merion High School, presented the plan. He said that it was adapted from what had been approved by the Cenral league.

The plan would have called for practices to begin on December 7. Actual competition, against league opponents only, would have started during the week of January 11.

One of the features of the plan was for the procurement of electronic whistles, so that game officials would not have to unmask. During games athletes would have been required to wear masks, except for water breaks.

For wrestling, the individual wrestlers on the map would not have to wear masks. Swimmers would also not have been required to wear masks in the pool.

Board members, Ben Driscoll, Lucy Klain, Peter Lee and Laurie Actman voted for the Winter Sports Plan.

Debra Finger, Shayna Kalish, Shawn Mooring, Subha Robinson and Melissa Gilbert (casting the deciding vote) voted the measure down.
