At Recently Demolished 1850s-Era Bala Cynwyd Mill Site, Construction Crews Top Off New Senior Living Facility

by Gerry

Mill Bala Cynwyd Before and After

On Thursday (June 17), construction workers “topped off” the Residence at Bala Cynwyd, a senior living facility situated at the corner of Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road. Until January of 2020, the remnants still remained at this location, of what had been a wool mill dating back to the 1850s

The Residence at Bala Cynwyd is owned by LCB Senior Living, located in Norwood, Massachusetts.

Ted Doyle is Vice President of Marketing and Communications for LCB. He was at the construction site for the “topping off” on Thursday.

In previous incarnations this location was the site of a woolen mill, a casket factory and most recently, a garden center

As it always has, the flume from Gully Run Creek runs through this location. “It’s presented some interesting design challenges. But it also adds an element of the past that’s going to stay on site. And we think it’s beautiful.”

The new facility will offer three levels of care – Independent Living, Personal Care and Memory Care.

The type of care known throughout most of the United States as “Assisted Living,” is referred to in Pennsylvania as “Personal Care.”

“We have vehicles on-site to take residents where they want to go. We have a van and we’ll have a town car, and those will be for everything from going into New York City to go to a museum, to going shopping for groceries or clothing or other things like that, or transportation to doctors’ appointments.”

“One of the things that was attractive about us … as a for-profit entity serving seniors, we have a very low impact on local services – things like schools – and we are tax positive.“

Family Learning To Luge

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them. Whether you’re a serious collector, someone who misses the feel of writing by hand, or just […]
