Presumed Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Josh Shapiro went to McKeesport today, the hometown of Austin Davis, and endorsed Davis in the upcoming race for Lt. Governor.
Davis, 32, is in his third term as a state representative. In addition to McKeesport, his district includes other steel towns along the Monongahela River.
If elected, Davis would be the first African American to become Lt. Governor in Pennsylvania.
It is unusual for a gubernatorial candidate running in a Pennsylvania primary to endorse a candidate for Lt. Governor, but then again, it also unusual for a candidate in the primary to have no serious opposition, which appears to be the case for Shapiro.
Voters in Pennsylvania separately elect candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor in the primary. But in the general election it’s impossible to “split tickets.” As is the case with the President and Vice President of the U.S., candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor are presented to voters as “a package.”
