As the rapidly declining, but once omnipresent Sears Department Stores announced that they will be closing their last full-service location in Pennsylvania, we were reminded that the former retailing giant, for a relatively short time, had a full-service store and a regional headquarters in St. Davids, Radnor Township.
Sears in St. Davids opened on October 21, 1964. The store was located near the intersection of Radnor-Chester Road and Lancaster Avenue.
Sears in St. Davids closed in July of 1983. Management at that time had decided that “the future” for the big chain was “at the mall,” not in free-standing stores. Sears closed their regional office in St. Davids in 1986
In 1965, one year after the Sears Store opened, just across Lancaster Avenue, the B. Altman, St. Davids store had its St. grand opening. That store closed in 1989.
