What’s Happening In Lower Merion, Narberth, The Main Line And Beyond – 3/26/2020

by Gerry March 26, 2020

“My father died, at 89, last fall. He also watched 20 years of Kobe’s play — 24, if you include high school — and it helped strengthen the bond between us. Dad would tape the late games and watch them in the morning. If we felt Kobe had an off night, we simply erased the DVR.” Gregg Downer, Lower Merion Aces Basketball Coach – Philadelphia Inquirer.

“The local infrastructure, especially the healthcare infrastructure, and especially in off-season, is not prepared for the influx of part-time residents.” Phil Murphy – NJ.com

Lower Merion Schools Cited for Having Easy Transition to Online

The Notebook, “an independent, nonprofit news service serving thousands of supporters of the Philadelphia public schools,” reported yesterday that,

“On Tuesday, Philadelphia Superintendent William Hite announced that the District was planning to purchase or otherwise acquire devices for all its students who don’t have them, relying on schools to assess their students’ needs.

In a Facebook Live video, Hite said that he would ask the Board of Education for funds to purchase 50,000 devices to give to students at home within the next two weeks. He did not specify how much he was asking for or where the money might come from.”

The Notebook called attention to the disparities among school systems with respect to how well they have been to continue to educate their children during the Coronavirus Crisis.

According to The Notebook,

“All Lower Merion High School students have district-issued laptops to take home, and teachers are assigning students schoolwork and giving them deadlines for submitting it. Students understand that the work will be graded.

Even before the shutdown, most schoolwork in Lower Merion’s two district high schools was submitted online, so the transition has been relatively simple.

In Philadelphia, by contrast, no graded schoolwork is being done given the continued challenge of providing services to all students, and Hite has acknowledged that this school year will likely be marked by an ‘asterisk.’ “

Family Learning To Luge

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]

These Garments Have Been Politically Maligned

Most non-Arabs who wear the keffiyeh do not intend it to be Anti-Semitic in any way. They wear it as an expression of sympathy for Palestinian civilians, support for human rights, concern about war, or identification with a broader cause of national identity and self-determination. In their minds, it is directed toward Palestinians, not against […]

What Does My Fountain Pen Have In Common With The Former Lord & Taylor In Bala Cynwyd?

Both come out of the work of Raymond Loewy and his design firm. Raymond Loewy (1893–1986) helped define what modern America looked like in the mid-20th century. Through his design firm, he worked across an unusually wide range of industries—transportation, consumer products, branding, and architecture—often simultaneously. No one in history is more closely associated with […]

January 16-18: The Philly Pen Show — A Delightfully Analog Experience

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them. Whether you’re a serious collector, someone who misses the feel of writing by hand, or just […]
