Commissioners Discuss Long, Long Term Belmont Avenue Project

Commissioners Discuss Long, Long-Term Belmont Avenue Project

Current Railroad Bridge Would Be Replaced

Belmont Avenue Bridge

What makes this project so daunting is that the Norfolk Southern Railway bridge that’s “in the way.”

In his recent newsletter, and on a recorded video conversation with Dan Bernheim (President of the Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners), Commissioner Mike McKeon (D, Ward 3) discussed a proposed $40 million long-term project that would widen Belmont Avenue where it approaches the Schuylkill Expressway.

In his newsletter, McKeon said “I support the project in its current state. Over time, suggestions have been made to add more lanes including lanes into the township, and I remain strongly opposed to such changes because the idea is not to convert Belmont Avenue into a highway at the expense of the neighborhoods of Belmont Hills and Bala Cynwyd. “

The plan, as McKeon explains in the video, is for the railroad to build two temporary bridges further down Belmont Avenue (toward Main Street in Manayunk). Then the bridge that exists now would be torn down. And after the new bridge is constructed, the temporary bridges will come down.

The widening is really needed. The argument about more traffic being generated in residential neighborhoods doesn’t make sense.
It is a ton of $, but LM only pays a tiny fraction. LM needs a better gateway from the city to our township, easier x-way access, & at the same time to clean up those properties that would be bought by pdot.
I drive through there 2x/ week , and it is a real mess!

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]

These Garments Have Been Politically Maligned

Most non-Arabs who wear the keffiyeh do not intend it to be Anti-Semitic in any way. They wear it as an expression of sympathy for Palestinian civilians, support for human rights, concern about war, or identification with a broader cause of national identity and self-determination. In their minds, it is directed toward Palestinians, not against […]

What Does My Fountain Pen Have In Common With The Former Lord & Taylor In Bala Cynwyd?

Both come out of the work of Raymond Loewy and his design firm. Raymond Loewy (1893–1986) helped define what modern America looked like in the mid-20th century. Through his design firm, he worked across an unusually wide range of industries—transportation, consumer products, branding, and architecture—often simultaneously. No one in history is more closely associated with […]

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them.
