Haverford School Headmaster’s Letter to General Milley Is Making Waves
It looks like I’m not the only one who took notice of the open letter to General Mark Milley (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) that was co-authored by Haverford School Headmaster, John Nagl.
Since the letter first appeared in Defenseone.com on Tuesday (August 11), links to the letter, and comments about it have appeared in several widely circulated news and commentary sources.
The Hill reported that Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman “dismissed talk of potential military involvement in any post-election dispute, calling the debate ‘unserious thought.’ “
Ramesh Ponnuru in National Review noted how odd it was that the letter made no mention of what Joe Biden (who in the nightmare scenario that Nagl and his co-author, Paul Yingling describe in their letter to Milley, would be sworn in as president, but would be prevented by Donald Trump’s “Private Army” from occupying the White House) could or should do if their dire prediction should turn out to be accurate.
Rachel Maddow weighed in with a tweet to her 10 million followers.

Fred Kaplan penned an article that appeared in Slate.com, that took issue with Nagl and Yingling’s argument. Kaplan wrote, “their letter to Milley puts forth a terrible idea—and, more than that, an unnecessary one. It reflects a dangerous romanticization of the Great General on Horseback as democracy’s savior—and a surprising misunderstanding of the proper relationship between civilian and military authority (surprising because both Nagl and Yingling are scholars of the subject).”

John Nagl can’t avoid controversy. Why does the Haverford School support him? From assault charges against a family member, to his Trump Derangement Syndrome, he proves yet again to be unstable and unfit for the position he holds, and fails to live up to the standards he holds others too. Good bye, John, your time has past.
I really hope Nagl is appointed to an important position in the new federal government administration—if he wants it.

Really hope this Nagl character gets fired. The letter isn’t anti-Trump so much as it is anti-democracy and anti-civilian-control-of-the-military. It should disqualify him for any job.
