A Win For Lower Merion GOP- Sort Of

by Gerry

Arguably, the Republican Committee of Lower Merion/Narberth (RCLMN) won something this past May, in the  Primary for Lower Merion School Board. Two write-in candidates endorsed by RCLMN, defeated three Democrats who appeared on the ballot, having cross-filed to run in the GOP primary.

As a result of their primary win, for the first since just before the flood,  the local GOP will  field a full slate of Republican endorsed school board candidates in the general election.

The GOP has not won a township-wide general election since 2009, and the likelihood of that happening this November is significantly less than miniscule.

But even though their local candidates will again play the role of sacrificial lambs, it’s not as if RCLMN has no raison d’etre.

There are statewide elections this year for State Supreme Court, Superior Court and Commonwealth Court. All three races are expected to be highly competitive. Since 2017, Pennsylvania Republicans and Democrats have split judicial elections almost evenly, with no candidate winning any statewide judicial election by more than a few percenage points.

Lower Merion Republicans could probably help their  compatriots running for those court positions by keeping their focus here on local hot-button issues, like Oakwell and bloated budgets. Democrats on the other hand will probably try to call attention to what appears to be a nation-wide alliance between Moms for Liberty and the Republican Party.

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]
