Amanda Cappelletti Appears To Have Won SD-17 Race

by Gerry June 3, 2020

Amanda Wins!

If Daylin Leach winds up winning yesterday’s 17th District Democratic Senatorial Primary, then he can hoist up this page on his cell-phone for a photo-op, ala Harry Truman-1948.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

Amanda Cappelletti Wins

Only about 30% of the votes have been counted, but partial counts are in from almost every precinct in the district.

In an election unlike any other we’ve seen, not even taking into consideration the level of bitterness in the SD-17 race; it appears that among those intrepid souls who showed up to vote at the polls yesterday, Amanda Cappelletti was the clear favorite vs. the incumbent, Daylin Leach. Leach was seeking his fourth term.

Unless there is a dramatic skew in voter preference among those who voted in-person yesterday, versus the overwhelming majority who either cast their ballots by mail, or who took advantage of Lower Merion’s first ever “Drive-by Vote,” Cappelletti is going to win this primary. And the winner of yesterday’s election is all but assured of winning the General Election in November

The numbers so far.

Cappelletti  6,130    59.02%

Leach           4,587    40.98%

In the 2016 SD-17 Democratic Primary, a total of 37,650 votes were cast, and Leach got them all. It is expected that nearly as many, or possibly more votes were cast in the 2020 Primary.

For today’s basketball fans, Jalen Brunson is the face of Villanova basketball. Two NCAA championships. National Player of the Year. NBA All-Star. Leader of the New York Knicks. Nearly seventy years earlier, another Villanova player helped define both the university’s basketball tradition and the game itself. His name was Paul Arizin. College Careers. Brunson won […]

These Garments Have Been Politically Maligned

Most non-Arabs who wear the keffiyeh do not intend it to be Anti-Semitic in any way. They wear it as an expression of sympathy for Palestinian civilians, support for human rights, concern about war, or identification with a broader cause of national identity and self-determination. In their minds, it is directed toward Palestinians, not against […]

What Does My Fountain Pen Have In Common With The Former Lord & Taylor In Bala Cynwyd?

Both come out of the work of Raymond Loewy and his design firm. Raymond Loewy (1893–1986) helped define what modern America looked like in the mid-20th century. Through his design firm, he worked across an unusually wide range of industries—transportation, consumer products, branding, and architecture—often simultaneously. No one in history is more closely associated with […]

January 16-18: The Philly Pen Show — A Delightfully Analog Experience

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them. Whether you’re a serious collector, someone who misses the feel of writing by hand, or just […]
