Bryn Mawr Hospital Specialist Discusses Weightloss/Surgical Options
Dr. Samantha Witte, a bariatric specialist at Bryn Mawr Hospital, told Jessica Boyington of ABC6 that [weight loss] is “not just about diet and excercise. It’s a true lifestyle change and a lifelong process. And so very often, people come to us. They’ve struggled with weight loss their entire lives. They’ve yo-yo dieted. And some people have genetic problems that they have to overcome. Some people have medical issues that are secondary to their weight that make it harder to lose weight. And sometimes people just have bad habits that they’ve built up over a lifetime, and they aren’t broken overnight.
Witte talked with Boyington about what criteria that would determine if a person is a candidate for bariatric surgery. Witte said that most patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or higher, would probably benefit from the surgery. And she suggested that those with BMIs of 35 or higher, who have certain medical comorbidities, should also consider having bariatric surgery.
