by Gerry June 12, 2023

Steve Forbert Still

https://youtu.be/n6ztZv70-IcA no-longer-baby-faced Steve Forbert performed Sunday night (June 11) to the delight of an appreciative audience who covered almost every blade of grass with their blankets and beach chairs in front of the Gazebo in Bryn Mawr. After first appearing here in 1978 (at the age of 23) as the opening act for Tom Rush at the … [Read more...] about Steve Forbert Performs In Bryn Mawr For The Umpteenth Time

Louis Kahn – My Architect Too

by Gerry May 13, 2023

My Erdman Shot and Kahn

My first exposure to Louis Kahn's work was when I entered Harriton High School as a Sophomore in September of 1965. I recall seeing what, at that time, seemed to me to be a very strange-looking building on the campus of Bryn Mawr College. What captured my attention was the,  just opened, Erdman Hall Dormitory, which overlooked Morris Avenue, near Montgomery … [Read more...] about Louis Kahn – My Architect Too

Abbott Elementary Takes Shot At Charter Schools

by Gerry March 7, 2023

Abbott Elementary Charter Schools

Wednesday night's (March 1) episode of Abbott Elementary took a not-even thinly veiled swipe at charter schools.  Two teachers discuss their fears that a charter school operator could take over Abbott Elementary School. Barbara Howard (played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, who is married to State Senator Vincent Hughes) tells Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter) “They … [Read more...] about Abbott Elementary Takes Shot At Charter Schools

Bill Maher Gives Huge Shout-Out To Josh Shapiro

by Gerry January 30, 2023

Bill Maher Praises Josh Shapiro

On Friday night (January 27) Bill Maher gave a huge shoutout to Governor Josh Shapiro on his show, Real Time.  https://youtu.be/hczNpNz9a8s Maher praised Shapiro for signing an executive order that eliminates the requirement of a college degree for tens of thousands of state positions. Maher's guest, the somewhat, sometimes conservative Bari Weiss chimed in with an … [Read more...] about Bill Maher Gives Huge Shout-Out To Josh Shapiro

Family Learning To Luge

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]

These Garments Have Been Politically Maligned

Most non-Arabs who wear the keffiyeh do not intend it to be Anti-Semitic in any way. They wear it as an expression of sympathy for Palestinian civilians, support for human rights, concern about war, or identification with a broader cause of national identity and self-determination. In their minds, it is directed toward Palestinians, not against […]

What Does My Fountain Pen Have In Common With The Former Lord & Taylor In Bala Cynwyd?

Both come out of the work of Raymond Loewy and his design firm. Raymond Loewy (1893–1986) helped define what modern America looked like in the mid-20th century. Through his design firm, he worked across an unusually wide range of industries—transportation, consumer products, branding, and architecture—often simultaneously. No one in history is more closely associated with […]

January 16-18: The Philly Pen Show — A Delightfully Analog Experience

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them. Whether you’re a serious collector, someone who misses the feel of writing by hand, or just […]
