On Saturday (September 11), Villanova’s basketball coach, Jay Wright, was enshrined at the Basketball Hall of Fame, in Springfield Massachusetts. Wright was also an assistant coach of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Basketball Team at the recent Tokyo Olympics.
Wright joins an elite group of only seven other active Division I college coaches in the Hall of Fame (Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, John Calipari, Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski, Rick Pitino and Bill Self).
Four other Hall-of-Famers with ties to the Philadelphia area presented Wright. They were:
- NBA legend and former Sixer, Charles Barkley,
- Billy Cunningham who as a player was often spectacular “Sixth Man” on the 1966-1967 Sixers Championship Team, and then coached the 1982-1983 Championship Team
- Herb Magee, “The Shot Doctor,” and Head Coach at Jefferson University (formerly Philadelphia University, formerly Philadelphia College of Textiles) since 1967
- George Raveling, former Villanova Star and Head Coach at Washington State University. “
