Cliff Anderson, who died on Monday (July 26) at the age of 76, played his last season as a St. Joe’s Hawk more than 54 years ago. But to this day, his record of 14.6 rebounds per game (over the course of three seasons) is the highest of anybody who played basketball for St. Joe’s.
Anderson was also the eighth-most prolific scorer in St. Joe’s history, averaging 20.6 points per game. In his senior year, he averaged 26.5 points per game.
For his Sophomore and Junior seasons (1964-65, 1965-66), Anderson, a 6’4″ center shared the spotlight with Matt Goukas, a 6’5″ guard.
During the 1964-1965 season, St. Joe’s won the Big 5 Championship. They posted a regular-season record of 25-1, which was good enough to get ranked 3rd nationally. The Hawks lost to 4th-ranked Providence (the only team that beat them in the regular season) in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
They shaved points in the Final Four – March 24, 1961.
