In 2015, Bill Cosby was the centerpiece of Kevin Steele’s campaign for Montgomery County District Attorney. Steele filled the airwaves that fall with campaign ads denouncing his opponent for refusing to prosecute Bill Cosby. Castor had been the D.A. in 2005 and was attempting a comeback as the Republican candidate. He had previously been elected County D.A. in 1999 and 2003.
Steele, whose Democratic bonafides were questionable (he didn’t register as a Democrat until 2014, and his wife served as a Republican. Committeeperson from 2010 until 2014), was the standard-bearer for the Democrats.
Steele defeated Castor in the general election 90,051 to 72,920.
Steele released this statement today.
The majority decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court orders the release of William H. Cosby Jr. from state prison. He was found guilty by a jury and now goes free on a procedural issue that is irrelevant to the facts of the crime. I want to commend Cosby’s victim Andrea Constand for her bravery in coming forward and remaining steadfast throughout this long ordeal, as well as all of the other women who have shared similar experiences. My hope is that this decision will not dampen the reporting of sexual assaults by victims. Prosecutors in my office will continue to follow the evidence wherever and to whomever it leads. We still believe that no
one is above the law— including those who are rich, famous and powerful.
