Delco Dems ‘Cut’ State Endorsed David Spurgeon In Judicial Race

by Gerry

Despite winning the endorsement of the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee, Judge David Spurgeon got the cold shoulder from Delaware County Democrats in Tuesday’s (May 18) primary election for Commonwealth Court.

Even though Spurgeon was the only candidate rated “Highly Qualified” by the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Delaware County Democratic Committee decided that the needs of Pennsylvania’s citizens would be better served by two other candidates who they endorsed – Lori Dumas and Amanda Green Hawkins.

And the Delco Dems. showed their muscle by delivering big-time for Dumas and Green Hawkins on Tuesday. In Delaware County, Dumas got 37,872 votes. Green Hawkins received 24,385 votes. Spurgeon got a paltry 5,764.

By way of comparison, the Montgomery County Democratic Committee (MCDC) endorsed Spurgeon and Dumas. In this election voters could vote for two candidates, and it is considered an acceptable practice for Democratic county committees to endorse more candidates than the state committee, if the state does not endorse a full slate.

On Election Day MCDC also had a respectable showing – delivering 71,978 votes for Dumas, 47,208 for Spurgeon. Green Hawkins was held to only 12,476 votes in Montco.

Despite all that, it looks like Spurgeon is going to win.

Spurgeon currently leads Green Hawkins, statewide by 435,398 to 419,825.

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]
