On August 8, 1967, an A&P supermarket opened in Gladwyne at the corner of Youngsford and Conshohocken State Roads. At the same time, A&P opened another new store at 50th Street and Wynnefield Avenue, in Wynnefield.
During the 1980s, A&P rebranded its Philadelphia area stores, and called them all SuperFresh. Then in November of 2015, as A&P was filing for bankruptcy, the Gladwyne location became an Acme Store.
But Acme in Gladwyne was short-lived. Their store closed in February of 2019, as has remained closed until now.
The Philadelphia Business Journal reported on November 24 that – McCaffrey’s, a boutique grocery chain based in Langhorne, operates eight stores throughout the region and in high-end demographic areas such as Blue Bell, New Hope, Yardley, Newtown and Princeton. It signed a long-term leased for the Gladwyne space and Alterra will spend about $6 million renovating and upgrading the building.
