George Thompson Pew, Jr., March 25, 1942 – November 18, 2021. George Thompson Pew, Jr. of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 18. Born in Bryn Mawr, to George Thompson Pew and Constance Clarke Pew. Tom’s great-grandfather, Joseph Newton Pew, was the founder of Sun Oil Company. His grandfather, J. Howard Pew, was President and Chairman of Sunoco from 1912 until his death in 1971. J. Howard Pew was the co-founder, with Tom’s great uncle and great aunts, of Pew Charitable Trusts. Tom’s father was the founder of Aero Design & Engineering Company, which produced private, corporate, and military aircraft known as Aero Commander. Between 1955 and 1960, the first “Air Force One” for President Eisenhower was an Aero Commander.
Tom spent his youth in Oklahoma. He attended The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut and graduated from Casady School in Oklahoma City. He attended Yale University, University of Pittsburgh, and Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a First Lieutenant of the United States Army. In addition to his many business ventures, he retired as an independent financial consultant and served as Chairman of The Glenmede Fund, Inc. and The Glenmede Portfolios, a group of mutual funds managed by Glenmede Trust Company in Philadelphia, which oversees the funds for the Pew Charitable Trusts. He was a member of The Glenmede Trust Company Board for over 30 years and, during his tenure, served as Chairman of the Compensation Committee and the Nominating Committee. He was also a member of The Glenmede Corporation (parent) Board.
