Kenyatta to GOP House Members – You Can Boo, But It’s True!

Chides Republicans for demanding to be served by a service worker who gets paid less than $15/hr.

On May 19, on the House floor in Harrisburg, Malcom Kenyatta (D-181, Philadelphia) delivered a fiery rebuke to those who had suggested that “the purpose of the shutdown was to create unemployment in the commonwealth.”

When Kenyatta called out Republicans for “demanding to be served by a service worker who they refuse to pay a $15 minimum wage,” he was interrupted by Majoriity Leader Bryan Cutler (R-100, Lancaster), who asked for a point of order. Speaker Mike Turzai (R-28, Allegheny) then instructed Kenyatta to keep his remarks specific to the bill.

Kenyatta continued, “If everybody wants to talk about I need to go to a restaurant – we also need to be talking about the servers who are going to have to show up. And if we open up without a plan of keeping them safe, we are risking their families. We are risking families in my district. So you might laugh, and you might not care, but I care about the people I serve, and I wish that you guys would act like it.”
