Frank Geary could easily have been referring to Louis Kahn’s “Genel House” when he said, “Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.”
If you’re travelling from Ardmore toward City Avenue, at 201 Indian Creek Road, the house that Kahn designed for Ruth and Samuel Genel can be seen on the right as you approach Lankenau Hospital. It was built in 1951.
The Genel House is one of three buildings in Lower Merion that Kahn designed. The other two are the Shapiro House, on Hidden River Road, and the Erdman Dormitory at Bryn Mawr College.
