Lower Merion Township took a step toward amending its current “bamboo ordinance” that was first enacted in 2016, and amended in 2019. Last Wednesday night (February 3), the Building and Planning Committee (which is comprised of all 14 members of the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners) unanimously voted to approve the advertising of the amended ordinance.
Assistant Township Manager, Bob Duncan, explained that an “inpenetrable barrier” is currently required on all properties where bamboo grows, but the current ordinance “doesn’t provide any description of what that barrier might consist of.” The amended ordinance would require that the barrier “might be made of masonry, metal, or high density 80 mil. thick polyethylene.” The amended ordinance also changes the required depth of the barrier from 36 inches to 30 inches, so if property owners use a 36 inch barrier, “the 30 inch depth will give you the ability for some of that barrier to extend above grade to provide that additional protection.”
