PA ‘No Right To Abortion’ Amendment Advances

by Gerry

A Republican-sponsored constitutional amendment that spells out the non-existence of any right to get an abortion in Pennsylvania, was approved on Tuesday (January 25) by the Pennsylvania Senate Health and Services Committee. The committee approved the measure by a vote of 7-4, with all Republicans in favor of,  and all Democrats against advancing the bill to the full senate.

The key language of the amendment reads –

The policy of Pennsylvania is to protect the life of every unborn child from conception to birth, to the extent permitted by the Federal Constitution. Nothing in this Constitution grants or secures any right relating to abortion or the public funding thereof. Nothing in this Constitution requires taxpayer funding of abortion.

This amendment is yet another among a plethora of amendments that Pennsylvania Republicans have proposed in this session of the legislature.

The governor cannot veto a bill that calls for an amendment to the state constitution, which probably explains why Republican legislators have been proposing so many amendments to the constitution, although Republicans might argue that if Governor Wolf didn’t veto so many of the bills  that they’ve proposed that don’t require amending the constitution, they wouldn’t have a need to propose so many amendments.

Family Learning To Luge

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]
