Split Lower Merion School Board Approves Football, Starting Tonight
The Lower Merion Aces and the Harriton Rams will be returning to the Gridiron tonight, after the Lower Merion School Board (LMSD) reversed itself and decided to allow the township’s two high school football teams to compete in a limited Central League Schedule.
Harriton will host Marple Newtown tonight at 7:00, and also at 7:00, Lower Merion will play an away game at Garnet Valley.
Harriton was 1-9 last season, with their only win coming against Lower Merion, who was 0-10.
Marple Newtown is coming off an 8-4 record last year that included a 35-12 win over Harriton.
Last year Garnet Valley beat Lower Merion 58-12 en route to an 11-2 season, and a Central League Championship.
This year, both Harriton and Lower Merion will be playing an abbreviated five game schedule that does not include any games against each other. However, on November 20, Lower Merion is scheduled to play Radnor (location TBA); continuing America’s oldest schoolboy football rivalry.
On October 12, the board voted in favor of the abbreviated football season. However, LMSB president, Melissa Gilbert voted against the proposal, along with board members Shawn Mooring and Shayna Kalish. Lucy Klain, Ben Driscoll, Peter Lee, Laurie Actman and Subha Robinson voted in favor of the measure. Debra Finger abstained.Β
