The Lower Merion Aces advanced in the PIAA District One, Class 6A Boys Basketball Tournament with a 59-50 win Tuesday night (February 22) over Council Rock North. The win also guarantees Lower Merion a place in the PIAA State Tournament.
A nearly full house at the Bryant Gym in Ardmore saw 6′ 9″ Demetrius Lilley overwhelm Council Rock North at both ends of the floor. The Penn State-bound Lilley scored 23 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked six shots.
Council Rock North cut Lower Merion’s nine-point lead to two.
Lower Merion led the whole way, but they were unable to deliver a knockout blow. Midway through the third quarter, the Aces pulled away to a nine-point lead, and then things got interesting. When the buzzer sounded to end the quarter, Lower Merion’s lead had shrunk to two points.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Aces opened up a five-point lead on Sam Brown’s three-pointer. But Bernie Parent (Yup – that Bernie Parent – his grandson) snuck in for a layup to cut the lead to three. But that was as close as Council Rock North could get.
Lower Merion will host Abington, Friday Night, at 5:00.
