Last Minute TD Forces OT With Haverford – Then Aces Win 28-26

by Gerry

On Friday night (October 13), after scoring a touchdown in the first quarter at Haverford High School, the Fords held the lead until Lower Merion ran the ball into the endzone with 43.8 seconds left in the game. The Aces tied the game at 20-20 with a two-point conversion.

Haverford advanced the ball to the Lower Merion 25-yard in the remaining time. But that’s as far as they got when time ran out.

Before overtime began, Lower Merion won the coin toss, and according to PIAA rules, they were given the ball at the Haverford 10-yard line.

The Aces stepped up, passed for a touchdown, and then ran the ball in for a two-point conversion, taking a 28-20 lead. Then Haverford got the ball at what was now the Lower Merion 10-yard line. They scored a running touchdown, too, but their two-point conversion failed, and Lower Merion had secured their first win against Haverford High since 2009.

Having improved their record to 4-4, Joe Augustine’s Lower Merion Aces have a shot at finishing this season with a winning record. Lower Merion has three games left.- They play Saturday, October 21, versus Harriton at Lower Merion (1 PM), Saturday, October 28, with Conestoga at Lower Merion (1 PM) and the Main Line’s Fall Classic, Saturday, November 4 at Radnor (2 PM).

Based on the teams’ comparative records, Lower Merion should win easily against Harriton. An Aces win against Conestoga would be an upset, but we’re not talking about anything like App. State vs Michigan if Lower Merion should happen to win.

Although Lower Merion hasn’t beaten Radnor since 2011, the Aces have to be considered at least slight favorites to end that streak this year. In their last two games, the Raptors (formerly the Raiders) lost to Upper Darby and Penncrest. Lower Merion has beaten both of those teams. On the other hand, Radnor only lost to Upper Darby 46-40, and they were competitive when they lost to Penncrest, 34-26. Lower Merion on the other hand, didn’t blow out either of those schools. They beat Upper Darby 14-6 and Penncrest 13-7.

Lower Merion Football’s last winning season was 1992 (6-5).

Some people with a few kids and mortgages were born after Lower Merion’s last winning season.

Family Learning To Luge

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]
